Some practical information before your trip to the Philippines

First and foremost, we recommend that you do not rent a car in the Philippines, as driving is very different from here and quite dangerous if you are not used to it. The roads are not always adapted, scooters are very (very) numerous and especially at rush hours, which makes traffic complicated (high density). Moreover, you need an international driving licence or you will not be able to drive a car. When you are in the big cities, you can use the “Grab” application to get around, it is the equivalent of Uber in Southeast Asia.

What to do in Manila?

The capital of the Philippines, Manila is in a state of continuous change. A large metropolis, it mixes past and future. Its nightlife is important. We start this 10-day road trip in Northern Philippines with a day in Manila, but don’t worry, you will return to the capital at the end of your trip.

• Explore the city’s historic neighbourhood: Intramuros. It is the oldest in the city with its churches, cathedrals, museums… The best way to get to know almost everything about the history of this area is to take a guided tour, either on foot to get around or by bike for a more sporty alternative.
• Rent a jeepney (military jeeps transformed as typical Philippines public transport) or just walk around the many streets.
• Start your visit of Intramuros with the Saint Augustin Church, which will tell you about the history of Philippines.
• Interested in Spanish colonisation?  Head to Santiago Fort (Intramuros), one of the rare ruins in the Philippines. And if you want to save money, keep in mind that you can get in for free on Sundays!
• Take advantage of a beautiful end of the day to go and have a drink on one of the many rooftops of the capital. Beautiful views and sunshine are to be expected!

What to do in Baliuag?

Baliuag is a city of the Bucalan region and is right next to the region of Pampanga. It’s a nice stop of this 10-day road trip in Northern Philippines, alternating between culture and nature. 

• Explore the Baliuag Museum and Library, cultural center in the city center, telling the city’s history.
• A 45 min drive away, go discover the Candaba Bird Sanctuary get to enjoy nature and admire rare birds (don’t forget your binoculars if you want to get a closer look of these birds !).
• If you like visiting, San Agustin Church is a must-see. One the most beautiful churches of the region, it is a popular attraction.

• History lovers, go in Barasoain Church you’ll love it! It has many beautiful sculptures and there are 2 museums nearby.
• In the city center, go see the Capitol, a large white monument you can not miss.

• Walk along the typical beaches and meet the local fishermen getting back from their daily fishing.
• Stop at Lapaz Park for a moment and let the kids have fun on the playground while you enjoy the stunning view of the sea.

• Relax on a bar’s patio and enjoy the city’s atmosphere.
