Spain’s official language is of course Spanish. So if you took Spanish in high school, it’s your time to shine ! But don’t worry if you skipped Spanish classes, english is also widely spoken across the country.

Official currency in Spain

Money, money, money

The official currency in Spain is the euro (€). So for you non European folks, better get a money converter on your phone so you can manage your expenses more easily.
Credit/debit cards are are accepted everywhere and ATMs are easily found. Just be sure to warn your bank that you are traveling so that they won’t block your card for suspect abroad transactions.

Traveling in Spain

Is the steering wheel on the left or right ?

Traveling in Spain is best with a car. You will need to be at least 21 years old and have had your driver’s licence for at least one year. If you are younger than 25 years old, some car rental agencies might make you pay a “young driver’s” fee. If you are not a EU citizen, better get an International Driving Permit.

If you were wondering what side the steering wheel is on, it’s on the left side and Spaniards drive on the right side of the road.

• Trains : around 10€/trip, depending on its length of course. For example Barcelona-Figueras will be 12€ .
• Busses : start at 2€/ticket.
• Car rentals are on average about 75€/week during low season in big agencies.
• Gas is about 1.2€/liter.
• Taxis : about 1€/km.

Accommodation

• Around a 15€/night in youth hostels and 40€/night for a 2-person bedroom in a hotel.

Eating 

• Expect about 15€/person/meal in an average restaurants.

Practical information in Spain

Tips to travelers

• Tips are not mandatory but are highly appreciated.
• If you are used to eating at noon and at 6pm, you will probably thinks Spaniards eat crazy late … lunch is eaten from 1.30pm to 4pm and diner starts at 9pm ! And shops are usually closed from 2pm to 5pm.
• It is recommended to drink bottled water.
• Be sure to pack some sunscreen if you don’t want to burn under the Spanish sun.
